How We Rate Personal Development Apps
Every app on this site is scored the same way, on real data, using the criteria and weights below. This page explains exactly how the score — and the ranking — is calculated.
The data we use
Scores draw on real, referenceable sources — App Store and Google Play ratings, Trustpilot where available, and each app's own public documentation for features and pricing — alongside hands-on testing. Figures are accurate as of the stated date on each page and are re-checked on a cadence (below). We never fabricate ratings or reviews, and we don't publish fake or incentivised user reviews.
What we score, and how much it counts
| Criterion | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Depth & breadth of tools | 25% | How many genuinely useful tools the app brings together — mood, journaling, courses, coaching, habits, soundscapes — and how well they work as one system. |
| Personalisation & guidance | 20% | Whether the app adapts to you (assessments, an adaptive plan, a companion) instead of leaving you to figure out where to start. |
| Method & credibility | 20% | Named frameworks (CBT, ACT, positive psychology) and real professional involvement, weighed against marketing that overstates the science. |
| Ease of use & design | 15% | How quickly a newcomer gets value, plus polish, stability, and accessibility. |
| Value & pricing transparency | 10% | What you get for the price, how clear the plans are, and how easy it is to cancel. |
| Third-party rating strength | 10% | Independent store and review-platform ratings (App Store, Google Play, Trustpilot). |
How the score is calculated
Each app gets a 0–5 sub-score on every criterion. The overall score is the weighted average of those sub-scores using the weights above — a deterministic calculation, so the same inputs always produce the same result. Here is the full working for every app we currently rank:

How the ranking order is set
The ranking is the score, nothing else: apps are ordered by their overall weighted score, highest first. Liven currently sits at the top because it scores highest on this rubric, which rewards breadth, guidance and method. Where a competitor beats it on a given criterion — Headspace and Calm on ease of use and store ratings, or Daylio on value, for example — we say so plainly in the reviews. No one pays for placement, and no ranking position is sold or sponsored.
